What is an Athletic Therapist?
Athletic therapists assess and treat all manner of musculoskeletal issues. This means that if you’ve injured a muscle, bone, or joint, or are an active individual who wants to avoid injury to these structures, Athletic Therapy can benefit you. Whether on the side-line providing first aid and facilitating an athlete’s return to play, or in a clinic helping a patient through a post-surgery rehabilitation, Athletic Therapists use a wide variety of rehabilitative techniques such as soft tissue release and mobilization, physical reconditioning, and supportive taping to help facilitate and speed healing. Therapy can also include patient education regarding re-injury prevention and lifestyle factors to keep you moving as long as possible.
How is Athletic Therapy different than Physiotherapy?
Certified Athletic Therapists specialize in orthopaedic assessments and rehabilitation of all physical injuries to affected muscles, bones and joints of the body. That training is augmented with injury prevention, supportive taping, and emergency care for field work with sport teams or higher risk active work. Athletic Therapy is based on a sports medicine model of rehabilitation; certified therapists have the know how to retrain the active individual with sport/activity/job specific exercises to get them back to pre injury performance levels.
Physiotherapists have a much wider scope of practice including orthopaedics, cardio-respiratory rehab, burn patients, paediatrics, geriatrics, stroke rehab and rehabilitation for neurological diseases.
