What is Chiropractic?
One of the largest primary care professions in Ontario, chiropractic is an evidence-informed, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal system.
Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, and provide diagnoses, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system, muscles, and joints.
Chiropractors use a combination of treatments, depending on the specific needs of the individual patient. After taking a history, performing an examination and establishing a diagnosis, a chiropractor can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment/management plan, recommend therapeutic exercise and other non-invasive therapies, and provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling.
What is Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT)?
Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT), or a chiropractic adjustment, is a highly skilled and precise technique. It is a high velocity, low amplitude thrust that is applied to a specific vertebra of the spine in an attempt to restore proper movement and function to that spinal joint. This motion can be accompanied by an audible pop – When a joint is adjusted, an air bubble may escape from the joint capsule causing the popping noise, similar to cracking your knuckles.
What is Contemporary Medical Acupuncture?
Contemporary Medical Acupuncture is a precise peripheral nerve stimulation technique, in which fine solid needles (acupuncture needles) are inserted into anatomically defined neurofunctional sites, and stimulated manually or with electricity for the therapeutic purpose of modulating abnormal activity of the nervous system and/or the endocrine, exocrine and immune systems, in pain syndromes, functional problems, and any diseases in which these modulatory mechanisms are available.
